After ruining take 6 on a 12 inch blank because my heating lamp died mid-cut, I finally broke down and spent $85 on a temperature controller, and now I want to know if anyone else here runs a PID on their lathe or if I'm just overengineering a hobby setup.
Did your lamp just die out of nowhere or was it on its way out for a while? A buddy of mine rigged a PID on his setup after a similar meltdown and he says it was the best $80 he ever spent. He still cuts by hand, just doesn't babysit the heat anymore.
