Question about my plastic spoon garden markers, turns out I was doing them backwards for 2 years

I always wrote the plant name on the handle part of the spoon thinking it would last longer in the dirt. Last Tuesday I watched my neighbor Mary in Fresno push her spoons in handle first with the name on the bowl, and it clicked that mine were breaking off at the thinnest point every single season. I had gone through about 60 spoons from the dollar store over 2 years, and she was still using the same 12. The bowl part is wide enough to write big, so now I can read the labels from the porch. Has anyone tried coating the writing with cheap clear nail polish, or does that just peel off?
