I know everyone raves about those glass candle holders from DollarTree for DIY projects. I tried using one as a centerpiece for a dinner party last Saturday, and within 45 minutes the heat cracked the glass and hot wax spilled all over my tablecloth. The tea light was just a standard cheap one, not even anything fancy. Lesson learned? Not all dollar store glass is made for real heat, even if it looks sturdy. Has anyone else had a dollar store glass item fail on them like this?

Spent 3 hours trying to fix a dollar store lamp shade

Bought this plain lampshade for $2.50 and thought id just wrap it in fabric. Four hot glue burns and a bent wire frame later, the thing still looks like a sad paper bag. Did anyone else struggle with dollar store lamp projects or am I just bad at this?

Had a chat with my neighbor that made me rethink how I glue things

My neighbor Joe saw me hot gluing a dollar store picture frame back together last week. He said I should try using E6000 instead because hot glue gives out after a few months in the sun. I brushed him off at first but then he showed me a birdhouse he built 2 years ago with dollar store craft sticks and E6000 that still looks solid. Now I'm wondering what other dollar store adhesives I've been sleeping on. Has anyone tested which cheap glues actually hold up long term?

Dollar store super glue is a trap for vinyl floor repairs

I keep seeing people use those little dollar store super glue tubes to fix curling vinyl or linoleum seams. That stuff gets brittle after about 3 months and then the seam cracks worse than before. Has anyone found a dollar store adhesive that actually stays flexible for floor fixes?

My dollar store wreath fell apart 20 minutes after I hung it on the door

Last Saturday I spent like 2 hours making this cute fall wreath out of fake leaves and a foam ring from Dollar Tree. I glued everything on with their hot glue sticks, thought it looked solid. Hanging it up, heard a weird crack, and then bam the whole thing dropped and shattered on my porch. Pieces of orange leaf went everywhere. I swear I used half the glue stick on each leaf. Has anyone else had their hot glue gun stuff just fail after a few hours? Is there a trick to making dollar store glue actually hold?

Used a dollar store cookie sheet as a paint palette and it actually worked great

I grabbed one of those thin, cheap baking sheets for $1.25 and poured acrylic paint on it, and the paint beaded up instead of soaking in like on paper plates. Has anyone else repurposed dollar store kitchen stuff for art projects and found a weirdly good use?

Appreciation post: my neighbor made me rethink dollar store wreaths

My neighbor Linda stopped me last Saturday while I was hanging a new fall wreath I made from dollar store leaves and a foam ring. She said 'you know, those cheap leaves actually hold up better than the ones I get at the craft store for $5 each.' She was right, mine are still bright after 3 weeks of rain and her expensive ones are already faded. Makes me wonder if I've been overpaying for craft store supplies when the dollar stuff works just as good. Anybody else notice certain dollar store items actually outlast the pricier versions?

The Dollar Store Super Glue almost ruined my wedding cake topper

For the last year I've been making little resin crafts using dollar store super glue. Worked fine every time. Then last month I tried to glue together a cake topper for my sister's wedding and it literally crumbled into 3 pieces the next morning. Turns out the glue's shelf life is basically a lie. I checked the tube after and found a 'best by' date that was already 4 months passed. Nobody tells you that dollar store adhesive degrades way faster than the name brand stuff. Has anyone else had their projects fall apart because of expired dollar store glue?

She said they needed more depth and texture, so I started layering in those fake greenery bushes from the $1.25 section at Dollar Tree. Changed my mind about dollar store spray paint vs name brand for a lamp project

I was all set to use a $3 can of matte black from Dollar Tree on this old brass lamp I found. But then I read a forum where someone said the dollar stuff peels off after a few months, especially on metal that gets touched a lot. So I spent $7 on a can of Rustoleum instead, which hurt my pride a bit. After sanding and priming the same way, the cheap paint went on blotchy and took 4 coats to cover. The name brand covered in 2 coats and looks way smoother. Has anyone had luck with the dollar store spray paint on something that doesn't get handled much?

Figured out how to fix a cracked planter with $1.25 and a candle

I was at the Dollar Tree last weekend grabbing some cheap flower pots for my porch, and I dropped one on the concrete. Cracked right down the side, about 4 inches long. I was annoyed but figured I'd try something I saw on a gardening forum. I bought a pack of plain white tea lights for a buck and a quarter, melted the wax in a beat up pan I don't cook with, and brushed it into the crack from both sides. Let it cool for like 20 minutes and the pot held water perfectly. It's not pretty but it works for a nursery pot inside a nicer one. Has anyone else tried using candle wax for sealing up cheap pottery?

Used to think real craft stores were better until the Dollar Tree foam core project

I always figured you needed proper craft store supplies for anything that would last. Last month I needed to make some display signs for a bake sale and I was about to drive 20 minutes to Michael's. But I stopped at Dollar Tree first just to see what they had. I grabbed a pack of foam core boards for $1.25 each and some acrylic paint. Honestly the foam core is a bit thinner but it cuts way cleaner with a box cutter. The paint stuck fine and the signs held up all day outside in the sun. Now I'm wondering how many other dollar store items I've been overlooking. Has anyone else switched from hobby store supplies to dollar store stuff and been surprised at the quality?

Serious question, is hot glue really the best option for dollar store crafts?

I used to swear by hot glue for everything until a commenter on my last post pointed out it gets brittle in heat and my wreath literally fell apart after 3 days in the sun. Switched to E6000 from the dollar store and that thing held up through a whole summer on my front door in Texas. Has anyone else found a better adhesive for outdoor projects that you can actually get at Dollar Tree?

Hot take: Dollar store spray paint is actually fine for outdoor stuff

I painted my wooden planters with that $1.25 Rust-Oleum knockoff last spring and they still look good after a whole winter of rain and snow. Everyone says you have to spend $8 a can for garden projects but I saved $20 and got the same result. Has anyone else had good luck with the cheap stuff or did I just get lucky?

Tried those dollar store hot glue sticks on a fabric project and they melted through my whole shirt

I grabbed a pack of the white hot glue sticks from Dollar Tree last week to fix a hem on an old denim jacket. Figured glue is glue right? Well after 2 minutes with my low temp gun the stuff turned into liquid lava and soaked right through the fabric. Left a hard plastic stain on my shirt underneath. Lesson learned: not all glue sticks are the same. Anyone else had cheap craft supplies backfire on them?
