Bought a $340 light table for hand lettering last year and it's the only tool I don't regret
I do hand lettering layouts for signs and I used to tape everything to my sliding glass door to catch the sun like some kind of caveman. Last March I finally dropped $340 on a proper light table and it paid for itself in two months of side jobs. Before that I was redrawing the same guide lines four or five times a night and my line work was sloppy because I couldn't see through three sheets of tracing paper. The table fixed my alignment problems right away and I stopped wasting paper, which honestly was costing me $30 a month. I know some of you swear by a cheap window and a roll of tape and I get it, but that only works if the sun cooperates. What's the one tool in your setup that you'd buy again tomorrow at full price?
The sun thing is the real killer too, because even when it works you're stuck lettering at whatever angle the window gives you and your back pays for it later. A light table lets you sit upright at your actual desk with your paper flat, which sounds small until you've spent a year hunched over a door frame. My pick would be a decent self healing cutting mat, because mine gets used on every single project and I'd grab another one today without blinking.
