Old slurry pump vs new one, is the extra $12k actually worth it?

Honestly, I ran the same clamshell rig on the Cape Fear River for 8 years with an old 8-inch pump that just wouldn't die. Last month I finally swapped in a new hydraulic unit because parts were getting impossible to find. The new one moves about 20% more solids per hour, no doubt, but the fuel burn is noticeably higher and the control feel is way too twitchy for tight cuts. Some guys in the yard swear the older models were more forgiving on uneven bottoms, while others say the precision saves real money on rework. Which side are you on, is the newer tech actually paying for itself or are we just chasing numbers?
