The day a sandbar ate my anchor line near Cape Hatteras
I was running a small cutterhead dredge off Cape Hatteras last fall when a shifting sandbar buried my anchor line so deep it took three hours to dig it out with a hand spade. Now I always run a secondary pickup line to a float, even on calm days. Has anyone else had a bottom shift mid-job like that?

Three hours with a hand spade sounds miserable.

Man, I totally get that! I once spent an afternoon digging up a single stubborn bush with just a trowel because I forgot my shovel at home. My back hurt for like three days after that. Sometimes you just get in that zone where you're like "I'm gonna finish this if it kills me" and then it almost does.
