inA park ranger in Moab told me the arches aren't really made of sandstone
Jumping in to say I totally get what you mean. That ranger gave you a real gift by breaking it down like that. It's one thing to look at a pretty arch and another to understand the slow, patient work of erosion (and different rock layers) that made it happen. I think most tourists would appreciate that kind of explanation, you know, something that sticks with them long after the hike. Keeping it simple is fine for a quick stop, but a little geology can turn a cool picture into a memory that actually changes how you see the world.

inHot take: My entire collection of hand-dyed silk got ruined by a faulty steamer in my Brooklyn studio last week.
That's a huge temperature swing. Makes you wonder about the quality control on the bigger industrial units. Are we talking about a faulty thermostat reading, or is the steam itself actually that much hotter at the nozzle? I've seen cheap ones where the steam output is super uneven, basically blasting in pulses.

inQuestion about using a graphite paddle for color work
My graphite paddle made my silver glass pop, just like @claire958 said it would.

inWalking through the new civic center downtown and the brickwork is... interesting.
Totally agree, it looks slick but won't last! Ben402 is right about the winter making it worse. I saw the same thing on that new condo building on Maple.

inA new cook asked me why we weigh everything and it made me stop and think
Weighing salt feels like overkill to me. Most of the time you can get close enough by feel, and the food still turns out fine. That extra step just slows down the rush when you really need it.
