Took me 4 years to understand cutterhead pressure readings

I ran a 14-inch cutterhead on the Mississippi near Baton Rouge and always kept the pressure needle around 80 psi because that's what the old guys did. One morning the pump started cavitating and a contractor pointed out my suction hose was half collapsed from pulling too hard. How do you all set your cutterhead pressure when the material gets soft and muddy?
