Took me 5 months to stop my 8 inch cutter from walking on hard clay, and it was one worn tooth
Ran my 8 inch cutter on a job in Baton Rouge last spring and the head kept drifting left about 2 inches every 30 feet. I blamed the swing winch, the spuds, then the pump. Replaced the winch cable, rebuilt the pump, swapped spuds twice. Finally pulled the cutter head and found one tooth holder bent maybe 1/8 inch that I had missed every inspection. Three teeth were fighting the rest of the chain and pushing the whole head sideways. Fixed it with a $40 holder and a torch in an afternoon. Anyone else found a small bent tooth hiding a big tracking problem? What do you check first when the head starts wandering?
