Overheard my coworker say he paid $400 extra for the 'turbo' trim on a car he drives to work

We were both stuck in traffic on I-35 last Friday and he told me he spent an extra $400/month just for the faster engine. He drives 2 miles to his office, never pulls a trailer, and we both sat there for 40 minutes going 5 mph. I felt bad for him but also kind of jealous he had the money to burn. Made me look at my own truck payment and wonder if I'm doing the same thing with my 4x4 upgrade I never use off-road. Has anyone else realized they paid for something they basically never use after hearing someone else's story?
