Broke a tile right at the shower valve cutout, so I tried a scrap piece first
Was setting the last row of tile around the shower valve in my St. Albert bathroom last Tuesday. Chipped the corner on a $9 porcelain tile right at the cutout for the handle. Sat there staring at it for a bit, then grabbed a scrap tile and practiced the cut twice before trying the real one. Used a diamond file on the edge and it worked fine the second time. Anyone else keep a bucket of scraps just for stuff like this?

My dad built a whole shed out of scrap lumber he saved from our deck project in 1998. Every offcut longer than a foot went into this pile behind the garage. Took him six years to use it all up. When I did my own basement bath last winter I started the same pile, and my wife complains about it constantly. That pile saved me three trips to the store when I ran short on the last row. Scraps are worth more than people think.
