Tried rigid foam board on my basement rim joists instead of fiberglass batts, no contest
I finally got around to insulating the rim joists in my 1950s bungalow near Mill Woods two weeks ago, and I did half the basement with fiberglass batts and half with 2 inch rigid foam board cut to fit and sealed with canned spray foam. The foam side is noticeably warmer to the touch and the cold drafts along the floor are just gone, while the batt side still has that chill. Has anyone else made this switch, and did you bother taping the seams or just rely on the spray foam?

That part about the foam side being warmer to the touch matches what a buddy of mine found. He did his rim joists in his old house over in Ottewell and went with the 2 inch foam plus spray foam at the edges, then taped the seams with foil tape anyway since the cans don't always fill every gap clean. He said the tape was cheap insurance and the floor above stayed warmer that whole winter. If you only sealed with spray foam, check the seams after a cold snap and tape any spots that look thin.
