Old timer at a job site in Boston showed me a trick for leveling rails that I never learned in school
He just used a 6-foot level and a piece of chalk instead of all that laser gear I was dragging around, has anyone else picked up a method that made you feel a bit silly for not knowing it sooner?

My buddy Dave at the hardware store was reconditioning his grandpa's old axe last weekend, and it hit me... we're all guilty of looking past the simple stuff. @the_iris nailed it about batteries dying, but it's bigger than that. I see it in the way people buy new phones every year when their old one works fine, or how my neighbor bought a fancy electric trimmer but still borrows my hand shears for the tight spots. That old timer with the chalk and level was showing you that sometimes the tool you already have is the best one for the job.

Oh my, that old timer probably saved you from depending on batteries that die at the worst moment.
