Saw a crew in Denver using the wrong grease on a hoistway guide rail last month

It was a standard lithium grease, not the moly-based stuff our manual calls for. Anyone else run into this and have a good way to explain the wear difference to a new guy?

Lithium grease on guide rails? That's asking for trouble down the line. The moly grease is made for that high-pressure sliding contact. You'll see scoring and accelerated wear without it.

Man, this is such a perfect example of using the right tool for the job. I see it everywhere, people using whatever is handy instead of what's actually made for the task. It's like using dish soap as car wash, it kinda works but strips all the wax off. That moly grease is built for that sliding pressure, just like lithium has its own uses. Using the wrong one just costs you more time and money later when things wear out faster.

Totally agree with both of you. It goes beyond just wear, too. That wrong grease can actually attract more dirt and grit, turning your lube into a grinding paste. You'll get that scoring Sandra mentioned, but also way more gunk buildup in the rails.
