Overheard a guy at the hardware store bragging about a 'smart' lock that bricked his whole front door

I was stocking the key cutting machine yesterday when this customer comes in ranting to his buddy about how his fancy $200 smart lock just stopped working after a firmware update. Said he had to call a locksmith who charged him $150 to drill it out, and now his door frame is all chewed up. Meanwhile my parents have been using the same basic Schlage knob for 18 years, never once failed them. I get wanting cool features but man, when the core function is 'keep my house locked', maybe don't overthink it. Do any of you stick to dumb old mechanical locks for the peace of mind or am I just being paranoid?

Oh come on, is this really that big of a deal? I mean, sure, it sounds annoying, but people act like their house is gonna fall apart because they had to call a locksmith once. Honestly, I bet the guy was just exaggerating for sympathy at the hardware store (you know how some folks love telling a story that makes them look like a victim).

I just keep a spare key with my neighbor now, never had to call a locksmith since.
