My aunt's weird 'add a pinch of sugar to the tomato sauce' trick actually works, which I confirmed after my sauce tasted too sharp three times in a row.
Has anyone else got a strange little fix like that from their family's cooking notes?

Oh yeah, a splash of vinegar fixes too-sweet chili.

My mom does that with her spaghetti sauce. It's like a little acid fixes everything that's off. I've started doing it with soups and stews too.

My grandma always told me to add a tiny bit of baking soda if my tomato sauce was too acidic. Ngl, I thought she was nuts until I tried it. It just takes the sharp edge right off without making it sweet.
