Hot take: I think a lot of farriers are trimming too much sole off the quarter horse feet I see at the local shows.

After measuring the depth on a dozen horses last weekend, I found most were under 3/8 of an inch, which I believe is making them sore on hard ground and inviting bruising.

Are you sure those measurements are the real problem? A thin sole can be the right call for some of those show horses to get that clean, classic look in the ring. Maybe the soreness comes from footing or conditioning, not the trim itself.

Ugh, that whole "classic look" debate is such a mess. Reminds me of a barn that kept blaming the arena sand when their horse was actually lame from a bad shoeing job.
