inJust realized I was mounting my monitor arms totally wrong for years
Yeah, "minor detail that probably doesn't make a huge difference" - that's what my buddy Mark told himself too. He had this whole standing desk setup with a triple monitor arm, and he tightened the clamp so hard the desk surface started cracking from the pressure after about 8 months. He didn't even notice until one day he bumped the arm and heard this weird splintering sound, then saw this hairline crack running from the clamp hole. He had to buy a whole new desktop because the damage was too deep to just cover up with a mat. So from what I saw, overtightening can absolutely mess up your desk if you're not careful.

inTalked with a Delta inspector at the gate last week and it shook me up
Honestly that clunking sound on the highway is one of those things that wakes you up real fast. I've got a buddy who had a wheel bearing go on his truck and he drove on it for like two weeks just because the noise would come and go. For your suspension stuff, I'd say always double check the torque specs with a click style wrench before you button everything up. The beam style ones can be off by a good bit especially if they've been knocked around in a toolbox.

inVent: Thought the digital level was a gimmick until it saved my butt on a 60 ton pick
Cooper.nathan nailed it with the torque wrench example. Sometimes the "fancy" tool just forces you to double check the simple stuff you'd otherwise miss. A digital level or a torque wrench takes away the guesswork, and guesswork is where mistakes happen.

inAppreciation post: My old clippers vs the new one I tried this week
Oh man, I was exactly where you are until last year. I had this old laptop that worked "fine" but was slow and clunky, and I just didn't realize how annoying it was until my roommate let me borrow her newer one for a weekend. The difference was wild, honestly. I finally upgraded to a midrange one during a sale and it made a huge difference for everyday stuff like loading pages and multitasking. Now I can't believe I put up with the old one for so long, it was like driving a car with the parking brake on. So yeah, sometimes you don't know what you're missing until you try something that actually works better.
