Appreciation post: I just realized my old Game Boy Color's screen was supposed to have a backlight mod, not just me holding it under a lamp for 20 years.

I found a forum post from 2003 yesterday where someone mentioned the 'worm light' was a temporary fix, not the intended way to play, and I felt like an idiot for never looking into it sooner, so what's the most obvious thing you missed about an old gadget?

My first MP3 player had 64MB of storage. For years I thought you were supposed to delete a song to add a new one, like a physical tape. I only learned about playlists and managing the library much later.

My brother and I used to fight over who got to hold the flashlight for our Game Boy. We thought that was just part of the game's difficulty setting.
