Vent: My old shop in Detroit used to pour straight from the crucible into the mold, no pre-heat.
We had so many cold shuts and wasted metal, it was crazy. After I moved to a shop in Grand Rapids, they made us pre-heat all our greensand molds to at least 150F with a torch before pouring. The difference in finish quality is night and day, and our scrap rate dropped like 20%. Does anyone else have a strict pre-heat rule, or is that just a Michigan thing?

My buddy's shop learned that the hard way too.

Ugh, tell me about it! We had the exact same thing happen at our place last year. It was such a mess and cost way more to fix than if we'd just done it right the first time. You live and you learn, but man, it's a tough lesson.
