PSA: Our family's 'clean out the fridge' fried rice night saves us every time

We gather all the leftover veggies, small pieces of meat, and cooked rice from the week. My kids help by stirring everything in a hot pan with a couple eggs and some soy sauce. It makes a new dish each Friday, and we hardly throw any food away. This little routine has turned into a cheap and easy way to end the week together.

Disagree with @the_hayden, that sounds like a recipe for weird flavors.

Recently, I read a piece from a chef who swears by leftover fried rice. They mentioned that surprising combos can work if you cook each ingredient separately first. @granta12, the fear of odd flavors makes sense, but a solid scramble of eggs and some green onions can cover a lot. Your mileage may vary, but I've found that a bit of sesame oil at the finish helps blend everything.

Oh man, we do the exact same thing every Sunday night! I call it 'whatever is in the container' fried rice. The best part is finding that last packet of soy sauce from takeout and making it all come together. It honestly feels like a win when you look at an empty fridge afterward. That's a great routine to have with your kids, too.
