TIL my neighbor's garage floor epoxy failed because they skipped the acid etch

He told me his whole floor started peeling after a single winter because he just power washed it. I'm about to do my own floor and was going to skip that step too. How important is etching really, and what's the best product to use?

My uncle made that exact mistake on his workshop floor in Toledo. The epoxy looked great for about three months before it all came up in sheets. Acid etching opens up the concrete so the coating has something to grip. Skipping it is like painting over glass. I used the Rust-Oleum kit from the big box store and followed every step, even the annoying etch, and it's held up for five years now.

Yeah, that "came up in sheets" part from @skyler_fox72 is rough. Did your uncle try to redo it properly after it failed, or just give up?
