Can we talk about how many writing prompts rely on the "it was all a dream" twist?

I was scrolling through a prompt list last night and counted 12 out of 50 prompts that ended with some version of "and then they woke up." That stat honestly surprised me, you know? On one hand, dream twists can be a fun way to explore surreal stuff or break a character's reality. But on the other hand, it feels kinda lazy and overused, like a crutch for avoiding a real resolution. What do you all think, are dream endings still worth using or should we retire them?

Caught my coworker saying 'dub is just filler' and I snapped back without thinking

Was grabbing coffee last Thursday and heard this guy from accounting say filler episodes in the original Dragon Ball are pointless. I told him the driving test episode is pure comedy gold and builds character better than half the modern seasonal stuff. He changed the subject quick. Makes me wonder how many people skip episodes just because they aren't fighting. Has anyone else had to defend a classic filler arc to someone who thinks they're above it?

Chat with a local farmer at the market changed my mind on composting

I was at the Saturday farmers market in Eugene and this older guy named Dave told me he just piles his kitchen scraps in a corner of his field and lets it rot naturally. He said all those fancy bins and layers people stress over are just complicating things. Has anyone else tried the lazy approach and actually seen it work for their garden?

Hit 300 kWh in one month and freaked out

I installed a home energy monitor back in March just out of curiosity. Never really paid attention to my usage before, just paid the bill. Last month I checked and my house used 300 kilowatt-hours in 30 days. That's like double what the average apartment here in Phoenix uses. The kicker was seeing that my old AC unit from 2005 was pulling 60 kWh just by itself. That number made me look up rebates for a heat pump. Now I'm actually swapping it out next week. Has anyone else had a similar wake up call from a smart meter?

Warning: sharpening my own knives changed everything...

I used to just run my knives through that cheap $20 electric sharpener every few months and thought that was fine. Last month after a shift I grabbed my chef's knife to slice tomatoes and it just smashed them flat. A line cook I work with in Chicago took me to his bench and showed me how to use whetstones step by step. Now I spend 10 minutes twice a week maintaining the edge and it cuts like butter every single service. Has anyone else switched from electric to manual stones and noticed a huge difference?

Can we talk about how I used to set nails vs. now?

Honestly, for the first five years I was shoeing, I'd always set my nails high and drive them deep into the wall. Then I worked a clinic in Lexington back in 2019 with an old timer named Hank, and he showed me a lower angle approach that saves the hoof wall big time. He said 'you're punching holes for no reason' and now I use a 45 degree pitch instead. Has anyone else switched up their nail placement after trying something different?

Saw a guy at a job site use a speed square for marking pipe angles... blew my mind

Was on a remodel in Denver last Tuesday and this old timer pulls out his speed square to mark a 45 on some copper pipe for the handrails. I always used a protractor or just guessed. He showed me the pivot point trick in like 30 seconds. Anyone else learn a tool hack way later than they should have?

Pro tip: rinsed my coffee filter before brewing at a local shop

I was at a small coffee spot in Portland last weekend watching the barista work and noticed they ran water through the paper filter before adding grounds. I always just plopped the filter in dry and poured. The barista said it gets rid of the paper taste and heats up the cone so the water doesn't cool down right away. I tried it at home the next morning with my usual medium roast and the cup really did taste cleaner. No more of that slight cardboard flavor I used to blame on the beans. Has anyone else noticed a big difference doing this, or am I just late to the party?

Had to choose between butter and shortening for pie crusts last weekend

I was making 6 pies for a family dinner and couldn't decide which fat to use. I went with half butter half shortening for the first time instead of my usual all-butter recipe. The crust came out flaky but still held its shape way better than when I use just butter. Did you guys find a ratio that works every time or do you stick with one fat?
