I bought a cheap rock tumbler kit for my nephew and it was a total waste of $75.
I thought it would be a fun way to get him into geology, so I grabbed a starter kit online. The barrel was thin plastic that cracked after the first cycle, leaking grit all over my garage floor. The motor sounded like a dying bee and gave up after maybe 20 hours of total run time. The 'rough rocks' it came with were just ugly, broken pieces of something that never got a good polish. I ended up having to buy a proper tumbler and decent rough agate from a real shop, so the whole thing cost me double. It taught me that with rock tumbling, you really do get what you pay for. Has anyone found a good, truly beginner-friendly kit that doesn't fall apart?

That sounds like a real mess, and a total letdown for your nephew. Those cheap plastic barrels are the worst, they always seem to crack right at the seam. The motor noise you described is painfully familiar, like a sad little appliance begging for mercy. It's frustrating how those kits can turn a cool hobby into a gritty, disappointing chore.

That "sad little appliance" sound, did it just give up?
