Just wasted $80 on a 'rare crystal' that turned out to be colored glass

Bought it from a seller at a gem show in Tucson last month... they swore it was natural citrine from Brazil. Got it home, checked it under my loupe, and it's full of bubbles and swirl marks. Total fake. I feel like an idiot for not checking right there at the booth. That was money I was saving for a decent rock hammer. Anyone know a good way to spot fakes before you hand over the cash?

Always bring a loupe and a strong flashlight to any show. Real crystals won't have bubbles inside, so check on the spot before you pay. It's the only way to avoid getting burned.

Solid advice, but now I'm picturing someone whipping out a full jeweler's kit at a flea market table. Gotta hope the seller doesn't take it personally when you start the full forensic investigation. Might need a tiny lab coat to complete the look.
