Hot take: Our band's release party disaster split our fans

We booked a cool venue but a sudden rainstorm flooded the floor right before our set. Now some fans say we should have checked the weather and had a backup plan, while others think the venue failed us. I feel like we lost a big chance to grow our audience that night. Is it worse to blame bad luck or poor planning in indie music?

Is one bad night really that serious for an indie band?

Honestly, reading this made me think of my friend's band that got caught in a similar downpour. They had to cancel their outdoor show last minute, and yeah, some fans were mad, but they posted a live session online the next day. @holly_hill89 has a point about one night not defining you, but doesn't how you handle the mess afterwards matter more? Like, did you talk to the venue about their flood policy or offer refunds? I mean, if the venue knew about flood risks and didn't warn you, that's on them, right? But also, checking the weather seems basic, so where do you draw the line between bad luck and just not being ready?
