Took on a bigger client and ignored my gut on the contract
I signed a 6 month retainer with a fintech startup in Austin without checking their existing agency reviews, and their last firm bailed at month 2 over scope creep, which is exactly what happened to me, so has anyone else skipped the homework and paid for it?

...and honestly I used to be the same way with contracts. I figured if the paperwork looked fine and the check cleared, that was enough. But a couple years back I took on a job without digging into the client's history and it bit me hard. Their last contractor had walked for a reason, and I found out that reason about six weeks in when they started adding stuff that wasn't in the scope. Now I always do a quick search on the company name and the word "dispute" or "complaint" before I sign anything. It takes ten minutes and it's saved me a ton of headaches since.
