Showerthought: Remember when AI could barely tell a cat from a dog? Now we're here.

I hit a weird milestone yesterday my photo app sorted 14,000 pictures in under a minute. Back in 2018 I spent a whole weekend tagging photos manually for a blog post and still messed up half of them. The algorithm found my old camping trip to Banff from 2015 and grouped all 47 shots of a squirrel like it knew what it was doing. It's not some big life changing thing but it made me stop and think about how fast this stuff moved. Has anyone else run into a moment where AI just quietly blew your mind with something small?

Huh is this really that impressive though? Feels like we're just getting better at organizing our mess rather than anything actually smart.

The thing is organizing the mess is a big part of what makes something smart in the first place. Like if you look at how humans learn, we're basically just pattern-matching machines that get better at sorting through the noise over time. So seeing an AI get better at that is actually a pretty big deal even if it doesn't look flashy right now. It might not be writing poetry or solving world hunger but structure and clarity are kind of the foundation for all the harder stuff down the road. Give it credit where credit's due, you know.
