Oil flare up almost caught my kitchen on fire last week
I was air frying wings at 400F in my apartment kitchen and opened the basket too fast, the grease ignited and shot a flame straight up into my vent hood. Had to throw baking soda all over it and now I never open the basket without turning it off first - anyone else had this happen with high fat foods?

Miles is right, I never thought about vent hood buildup til I saw black smoke puffing out of mine after that flare.

Did you check the inside of your vent hood after that? Grease collects up there over time and a flame like that can ignite the buildup inside the ductwork. I had a neighbor who had a small grease fire in a pan, thought it was out, but the vent hood caught fire an hour later from residue that had been smoldering. Might be worth taking the filter off and giving it a good scrub with degreaser, just in case.
