Just realized my last contractor did a half-assed basement Reno 3 years ago

Pulled up some carpet last week to lay tile and found the subfloor is just particle board sitting on dirt. No vapor barrier, nothing. This guy charged me $8,500 and said it was 'good to go'. Anyone else find hidden garbage years after a job was done?

Yeah I read this article last month about contractors in my state getting sued for this exact thing. Particle board on dirt is insane, that stuff will rot out in a year if it gets even a little damp. $8500 for that hack job is brutal, I've seen quotes for actual proper subfloors with vapor barriers and everything going for around that same price in my area. Hope you kept his info cause that's definitely worth taking to small claims or at least leaving reviews with photos everywhere.

Actually particle board can last a while on dirt if it's well ventilated and the ground stays dry, but that's a gamble not a plan. Still, $8,500 for that setup is ridiculous and you should definitely spread the photos around.
