Lost $2,800 on a basement Reno that took 8 months and still isn't finished
Signed a handshake deal with a guy in Red Deer last spring, paid half up front for a sump pump and framing, and he ghosted after 3 weeks. He had good photos on Facebook and a buddy vouched for him, so I didn't push for a written contract. Has anyone else had to eat a deposit like that, and what did you do to chase the money?

File a complaint with Red Deer's better business people and the RCMP fraud line even if they say it's civil, not criminal... the paper trail helps. Check if he's actually licensed through Service Alberta and see if he's got other complaints online, people post about these guys. Payment via e-transfer usually gives you a real name to chase down, so find out who actually took that money. Small claims court in Alberta has a $50k limit and you can file online, no lawyer needed... but getting a judgment is one thing, collecting is another. Worst part is the buddies who vouch for these guys never seem to know where they went when it matters.
