Shoutout to the guy at the Eubank lumber yard who told me to soak my tapcons in soapy water
I was fighting a 60 year old cinder block wall in my Nob Hill garage and snapping screws left and right, and he said just dip them in a cup of Dawn first. Went from breaking 4 out of 6 to zero, has anyone else heard this trick or am I the last guy to know?
Been doing the soap trick for years on old block. Dawn works but plain bar soap rubbed on the threads does the same thing and it's cheaper. The soap cuts the friction so the screw doesn't bind up and snap before it bites. Also helps to blow the dust out of the hole first, half the time that's what's killing you, not the screw. Old cinder block is soft and gritty so the tapcon grabs hard and twists off if there's any junk in there. Slow down your drill too, hammering it in wide open is a good way to snap the head right off.
