I skipped the midnight premiere of Haruhi in 2006 at the Mall of America, and a bootleg DVD changed how I watch anime
Back in high school I only got my anime from a friend's burnt disks, and I passed on a trip to the Mall of America midnight showing of Haruhi because my mom needed the car that Friday. My buddy handed me a bootleg DVD two weeks later with fan subs that had a typo in every third line, and I still finished the whole season in one night. Now I stream everything legally, and last week I rewatched episode 12 with real subs and caught three jokes I never got at 15. It made me wonder how many shows I only half understood back then. Anyone else have a bootleg copy that messed up a show you now love?

Bootleg subs honestly made me love anime more, typos and all. My copy of FMA had subs so bad I thought Ed's name was Edwardo for like a year.
