I was at the Portland anime con and saw a panel about old school mecha that changed my view
The panel host, a guy named Ken, showed clips from a show called 'Giant Robo' from 1992. He talked about how the story was about more than just robots fighting. It was about family and duty. Now I look for those deeper themes in any anime I watch. What's an older show that made you think differently?

Ken's right about those old shows hiding real heart. "Neon Genesis Evangelion" did that for me, made the robot fights feel like a side note to the messy people inside. It's cool how a single panel can shift how you watch everything.

Notice how the best stories use their flashy parts to pull you into something real. Evangelion's robots just give you a reason to care about the kids, and you see that trick everywhere once you look for it. It makes you wonder what else we're missing by just watching the surface.
