PSA: My friend in Austin said to skip the filler episodes in One Piece
He told me to just watch the canon episodes and look up summaries for the rest. I tried it for the Alabasta arc and missed so much character stuff that later episodes didn't make sense. Has anyone else tried skipping filler and regretted it? What's a better way to handle long series?

Man, that's like telling someone to skip all the boring parts in a car engine rebuild. Sure, you get it running faster, but then it blows up on the highway because you forgot the gaskets. Those "filler" episodes in Alabasta are where half the crew's inside jokes come from. You skip G-8 after Skypiea? You're missing the funniest arc in the whole show. Your friend gave you bad directions.

Honestly, skipping the G-8 filler arc after Skypiea was the worst advice I ever got. That whole base infiltration is pure comedy gold and shows the crew working together better than some canon stuff. I felt totally lost on later callbacks because I missed those moments.
