DAE rethink their whole hinge cut after one climber picks it apart?
Had a climber named Dwayne out of Louisville watch me drop a co-dominant maple last Tuesday and he said my hinge was too thick, that on softer wood like maple you want it closer to 10 percent of the trunk diameter, not 20. I'd been cutting fat hinges for years because that's what the older guys around here taught me. Went back out Thursday on a big silver maple and tried his way, and the thing just folded over slow and clean instead of barber-chairing like I half expected. Anyone else switch up their hinge style after someone called it out, or do you stick with what your first boss drilled into you?
A guy named Ray from my old crew told me the same thing back in 2019 and I fought it for a while. Once I tried a thinner hinge on a soft maple I never went back.
