Spent 6 months brushing dirt off Roman pottery the wrong way before a conservator in London saw me and sighed
Turns out using a dry brush on freshly excavated pottery like I was doing on that dig in Bath just scratches the surface and traps more dirt in the microscopic cracks so how do you clean fragile finds without damaging them?

Oh come on, it can't be that bad. I've seen people scrub old coins with toothpaste and they're still sitting in museums just fine. Seems like a lot of drama over some dirt.
