Thinking about how our town's Roman villa find changed over the years

When they first uncovered it, kids would play in the dirt around the trenches. Now it's a protected site with guided tours and 3D models online.

Man, I get that. It's cool they're preserving it and all, but there was something special about when it was just this raw, weird hole in the ground. Feels like we lost a bit of the local magic when it got all official. I mean the 3D models are neat I guess, but it's not the same as actually poking around. Just feels more distant now.

My local coffee shop used to have mismatched mugs and a dog that slept in the corner. Now it's a sleek place with an app for orders and no character. I mean, it's cleaner and maybe more efficient, but it lost its soul. It's like everything gets polished until the rough edges that made it interesting are gone. Idk, maybe it's just me but that Roman villa story hits the same way. Progress always seems to trade charm for convenience.

Ugh, I found a dive bar that kept its soul after a reno, @hunt.taylor.
