Clouds rolled in 10 minutes before the lunar eclipse, so I shot it through a gap in the trees
I was set up in my backyard in Tucson at 2am with my old DSLR on a tripod, and right as totality hit, a bank of clouds covered the whole moon. I waited it out and caught about 40 seconds of clear sky through a gap in the mesquite, and that one frame ended up sharper than anything I got all year. Anyone else keep a spot picked out for nights like that, or do you just pack it in when the sky turns?
Man, that stings just reading it. Standing out there at 2am all set up and then watching the clouds roll in right at totality is brutal. But that 40 second gap through the mesquite paying off with your sharpest frame of the year is a great save. I've got a little clearing behind my shed I keep in mind for nights like that, mostly because I've been burned too many times to just pack it in right away.
