A paint rep said my clear coat passes were too wet and it fixed my runs

Back in 2011 I was spraying clear at a shop in Bakersfield and getting runs on maybe 1 out of every 5 jobs, which was driving me nuts. A PPG rep came by for a training day and watched me lay down two heavy wet coats like I had always done, and he said flat out that I was flooding the panel and to try three lighter passes instead. I argued with him for a bit, but the next door I shot I backed my fluid way down and moved my gun faster, and the clear laid out so much smoother. Runs went down to almost nothing within a month, and my redo pile in the corner basically disappeared. It felt weird shooting dryer coats at first since I was sure it would come out like sandpaper, but it leveled out fine every time. Now I wonder how many other habits I picked up in my early days that I never questioned. Any of you have a rep or a mentor call out something you did for years?
