Just realized why my paint match on that silver Honda was off last week

I was doing a quarter panel repair on a 2018 Civic in my shop, and the silver metallic looked a bit flat under the booth lights. I mixed the paint by the book code, but it just didn't pop right. My buddy Mike, who works at the dealership, stopped by and said, 'You check the variant code on the door jamb sticker?' I hadn't, and sure enough, it was a different variant than the main color code. Anyone else get tripped up by those little hidden codes?

Oh man, I used to swear by the main code. That variant sticker is a lifesaver.

Yeah, those variant codes are sneaky (almost got me on a gray Accord last month).

Honestly, it feels like they design those things to trick you. I spent a solid ten minutes once comparing two identical looking trim pieces, just different codes, feeling like I was taking a test I didn't study for. The worst part is when you finally find the right one and it costs twice as much. It's a whole little victory just to get the correct part ordered.
