Ngl I stopped sanding filler at 80 grit and my come back rate dropped to almost zero
Honestly I was always a 180 grit guy on body filler, that's what the old timer at the shop in Bakersfield drilled into me back in 2019. Then three months ago I got lazy on a Silverado bed side and only hit it with 80 before primer, figured I'd pay for it later. Tbh that repair came back flawless, no shrink, no scratches popping through after 6 weeks in the sun. So I tested it on the next 4 jobs, same thing every time, 80 grit followed by a quick 180 pass and my primer sanding time dropped by about 20 minutes per panel. Ngl it feels wrong after doing it the other way for 6 years but the numbers don't lie. Has anyone else noticed their old grit habits were just wasting time, or am I about to eat crow on a long term job?
Wait so are you doing the 80 pass and then just scuffing with 180, or actually sanding it out with the 180? If its just a quick scuff that changes everything cause youre basically leaving the filler cut open for the primer to bite into instead of polishing it smooth and sealing yourself out. Ive been doing the 180 thing forever too and now I wanna run your test on a couple rockers before I go telling the boss hes been wrong for 20 years.
