Used to cut and buff every panel by hand, now I let the DA do the work and I am not sure it is better
Back when I started at the shop on 5th street, I wet sanded and buffed every panel by hand and it took me 4 hours a car, now I run a DA with foam pads and it is done in 40 minutes. The finish looks just as good under the lights but I swear the hand job had less swirl marks. Any of you old timers stick with hand buffing or did you all switch over too?
I still keep a wool pad and compound on the shelf for the bad ones. Had a black Caddy last month that the DA just would not finish out clean, so I did the trunk and hood by hand and left the rest. Took me an extra hour but the owner spotted the difference right away under his garage lights. There is something about the speed of the machine that burns the product before it can lay down flat, that is my guess anyway.
