Was skeptical about paintless dent repair for a hail damage claim

My shop in Denver got a 2018 Silverado with 40 dents from that August hailstorm. Told the customer to go to a specialty PDR guy instead of me filling and painting, and the bill came back at $700 versus my estimate of $2,400. Customer was happy as hell and I actually learned a few tricks watching the guy work.

Saw the same thing with my buddy's F-150 after a bad hailstorm in Omaha last spring. He was about to drop almost two grand at a body shop for filler and paint, but I told him to let a PDR guy take a crack at it first. The guy knocked out 50+ dents in a day and charged $850, and you seriously can't even tell where they were from three feet away. I was kicking myself for not learning that trade earlier, honestly, watching how he popped those dings out with those little metal rods and special lights... it's wild how much paint and bondo we throw at stuff that doesn't need it.

Man if I'd seen that PDR guy work before I started running my own shop I'd have saved myself a lot of sanding blisters and paint overspray in my hair. Watching those guys slide rods behind a dent like some kinda magician definitely makes me feel like a caveman with a hammer in comparison. Good for your customer though, saving that kind of cash always makes the whole job sweeter.
