Broke a bleeder screw off in a caliper last Tuesday and spent 3 hours digging it out
Had a 2012 Civic in the bay last Tuesday for a brake job, simple stuff, pads and rotors all around. Went to bleed the fronts after and the bleeder screw on the driver side caliper just snapped off flush with the housing. Thing had probably never been cracked open in 11 years of Ohio winters, so it was rust welded in there. I tried the usual extractor set first and that just chewed up what was left of the hole. Ended up drilling it out with a left hand bit and picking the threads clean with a dental pick, then chased it with a 10mm tap I borrowed from the guy in the next bay. Took me almost 3 hours on a job that should have been 45 minutes, and I had to call the customer and tell her it would be ready the next morning instead of that afternoon. She was cool about it but I still felt like an idiot. Any of you got a trick for getting those out without drilling, or do you just plan on a new caliper every time one of these old ones comes in?
