Spent $340 on a smoke machine to chase a drain, and it paid for itself on the first car
Bought a used smoke machine for $340 back in March after a Subaru came in with a battery drain I chased for two days with a meter and got nowhere. Hooked it up to the intake, found a cracked vacuum line in about 15 minutes, and the customer paid the diag without blinking. What's your go to tool for chasing electrical gremlins when a plain multimeter just isn't cutting it?
Had the same thing happen with a Ford F-150 last fall, guy had a drain that killed the battery overnight and I spent almost three hours with my Fluke before I gave up. Bought a cheap smoke machine off Amazon for like $180 and found a bad ground strap in ten minutes, wire was green under the insulation where you couldn't see it. Best money I ever spent on a tool, honestly. Now I reach for it before the meter half the time. A meter tells you there's a problem but the smoke shows you exactly where it is.
