I needed my old Civic moved 1,300 miles back in March and every broker wanted $1,800 up front with no pickup date, so when this one guy quoted $600 and said he would pay the driver direct I almost hung up on him. He rolled up 4 days later in a rusty F-150 pulling a two car trailer with a Corolla already loaded, and handed me a signed bill of lading before I even gave him the keys. Has anyone else gone with the cheap independent guy over the big broker sites, and how did the delivery timing actually work out for you?
Used to be one of those people who said you get what you pay for with car shipping, and the cheap guys were always trouble. Then my brother in law talked me into an independent hauler for his truck and it came in under half the broker quote with no damage and only one day late. The big sites look nice but you are mostly paying for the website and the phone reps, not the guy actually driving. I would still ask for a bill of lading and proof of insurance before he loads anything, but a rusty truck does not mean a bad driver.
