Open deck vs enclosed in the rain, my Colorado to Phoenix move changed my mind

I always booked enclosed carriers for anything over $10k thinking it was the only safe way. Last month I had to move my 2018 Tacoma from Denver to Phoenix on short notice and enclosed was gonna cost $1,100 with a 2 week wait. Open deck was $650 and picked up in 3 days. I was nervous about the hail and dirt but the driver had this thick padded cover over the whole front end and tied it down real tight. Car showed up with maybe some bug splatter, that was it. Made me wonder if I been paying double for nothing on shorter trips. Anyone else switch from enclosed to open and regret it or feel like it worked out fine?
