Rant: Dropped $80 on a fancy heated birdbath and now I'm wondering if it was worth it
Got this thing from a local shop in Portland last month... it keeps the water from freezing even when it hits 10 degrees outside. Birds love it, I see more visits now. But my electric bill jumped about $15 for the month and I'm not sure if that's just me. A buddy says a simple heater plate for $25 works just as good. Anyone else spent money on one of these and felt burned or saved?

My heated birdbath only raised my bill $8 last winter.

Birds are a lot like people in that they remember who's reliable. Once they know your yard has water that won't freeze, they'll keep coming back winter after winter. That's worth something more than just the electric bill for one month. The real cost isn't the $80 or the $15 on your bill, it's whether you want to be the neighbor who half does things or the one who sets up something that actually works. Those little extras we choose often say more about how we want to live than the dollars spent.
