Rant: my baffle kept clogging because of one dumb mistake, took me 3 weeks to figure out
So I put up this squirrel baffle back in April and for almost a month the seed kept getting soaked and molding after every rain here in Columbus. I finally got down on the ground and looked up and realized I had mounted the cone upside down, which was funneling water straight into the feeder instead of running it off. I did the whole trial and error thing for 3 weeks before my neighbor Dave walked over and pointed it out in like 10 seconds. Now I am wondering if I am the only one who thinks it is worth buying the fancy $60 baffles or if the cheap $20 ones work just as well once you mount them right. Do you all swear by the pole mounted cones or the ones you hang from a line?
The whole "neighbor Dave walks over and solves it in 10 seconds" thing is basically a law of nature. My version of Dave was the guy at the hardware store who watched me buy a second baffle after I gave up on the first one, and he just said "you know the cone goes the other way, right?" Three weeks of me standing in the rain staring at a wet feeder like it owed me money. Anyway, the cheap ones work fine once they're right side up, I've had a $20 pole cone going on four years now and the squirrels still act like it's a war crime. Pole mount holds up better in wind, the hanging ones swing and dump seed every time it gusts.
